We read "The Mitten" by Jan Brett and used stuffed animals to demonstrate how each animal went into the mitten because it was cold outside.

We made a mitten craft.

We made masks of the animals and acted out the story of The Mitten.

We made snowman and snowflake cookies.

We will read "The Mitten" and act out with flannel board materials.

We will read "The Hat" by Jan Brett and act it out with various props.

We will make a sock (aka "The Hat") craft.

We will talk about how the hedge hog has sharp prickles on it's body to protect him from other animals. Then we will touch other objects and talk about how they feel (i.e., rough, bumpy, smooth, soft, hard etc.).

We will hide various objects in the snow and dig for them.

We will pain ant animal from one of the two stories.

What an exciting four weeks of summer school we've had! It's hard to believe that summer school is over already! During the past few weeks, we incorporated a lot of vocabulary and language associated with going to a restaurant. All of your children amaze me with the progress they have made in their speech, language, and auditory skills. I couldn't be prouder to have such a wonderful group of students! Thank you for trusting me to work with your child. They inspire me each and everyday. Please read on to find out about some of the language experiences, language structures, and vocabulary that we learned and practiced the past few weeks. I look forward to seeing most of you again in the Fall. For those of you who have graduated from NV, I wish you much success in all of your future endeavors. Remember..."The sky is the limit!!!!" Language Experiences:

The teachers put on one of our famous skits about "Going to the Restaurant."
We practiced working as a pizza delivery person and bringing pizza to someone's house. Try playing this at home.... lots of great language, vocabulary (deliver, pay, cash, credit card) and fun fun fun!
We made a menu with our favorite foods.
We made mini pizzas and pretended to get them from Pizza Hut.
We set the table at a fancy restaurant and role played the server/customer/chef scenario. Another fun activity to do at home!
We made nachos exclusively from Taco Bell:)!
We role played going to Burger King.
We took a field trip to Burger King and the students ordered and paid for their treat. Thanks for sending in the money for this experience! It was an excellent way to sum up our restaurant theme.

Welcome back to school!!!! It has been great to be back to see all of these smiling faces again! Your kiddos sure are missed here at NV! We had a fun-filled two weeks of summer school learning about sports. Below are some of the Language experiences, vocabulary, and language targets we practiced. I'm looking forward to continuing our last two weeks of summer school learning about restaurants while incorporating countries from around the world (i.e., Mexico, Italy, China, and America). "Oh the places we will go!!!"

Language Experiences:

The teachers put on one of our "Made for Broadway" Skits! We introduced many different sports such as: Soccer, football, hockey, golf, baseball, tennis, basketball etc.
We made sponge painted soccer balls.
We made paper footballs stuffed with newspaper and practiced tackling and making touchdowns. Look out for some future NV pro-football players!!:)
We made yummy basketball cookies...always a hit!
We practice shooting basketballs and other various sports balls in different size baskets and cups.
Our specials guests Henry and Sarah brought in their golf gear to let us examine and demonstrated various tips on how to play golf.
We danced to the music!!! We hit the dance floor and practiced gymnastics routines! Great fun!
We talked about the sport of swimming and various rules that need to be followed when going to the pool.

We will use straws to pretend to blow various objects like the wind.

Special guest: My stepdad "The Magician!" He will put on a magic show for our whole school. Be on the lookout for pictures to come home!

Make Castles with colored sand and learn about "Who" lives in the castle.

Make crowns complete with jewels and other fun materials.

Make magic wands and practice saying "Abracadabra" while doing some fun magic tricks.

Make "Royal" punch and wear our crowns while pretending to drink it in a castle just like kings and queens.

Read and act out the story of Cinderella.

Read and act out the story of Snow White.

We will watch clips from the movie Rapunzel while sequencing the story and working on verb tenses (past and present).

We will have a Royal Ball at the Castle! This will be on Friday, March 12. Feel free to have your child come dressed as a queen, princess, or prince.

Make flags to carry in our "Opening Ceremony" on Friday.

Have an "Opening Ceremony" in the Northern Voices hallway/gym.
We will have a special guest visitor to demonstrate cross country skiing (Erika O.'s husband).
Talk about the winter Olympic sports we like to play and make medals....because we are all winners at Northern Voices!
Make yummy Popsicles! We will also experiment with ice and talk about the ice rink where the Olympians play hockey and ice skate.
If the weather is nice...we will go "Bobsledding" outside!

Notes: Thank you to all of the parents who helped out with the Valentine party! It was tons of fun! The best way to reinforce this theme of "Olympics" at home, would be to expose your child to the olympics when they are on t.v. You could point out all of the different sports while using the vocabulary and language to go a long with it. This will provide your child more meaning and connection to this theme. It was more like a comedy show when the teachers acted out the olympics in the gym!!:) But lots of fun too! Thank you for all you do to help your child learn to listen and speak. They reap the benefits each and everyday!!

Read "Jack Be Nimble", act out, and make a page for our Nursery Rhyme book which will be sent home at the end of the theme.

Examine a hard boiled and raw egg's shell, yolk, and white. Then, add a little seasoning and eat them (the cooked ones of course!).

Have our very own little tea party with real (caffeine free tea) and Lorna Doone' cookies.

Notes: Nursery Rhymes can be very difficult for children with hearing loss to learn due to the unfamiliar vocabulary words and abstract language. Therefore, it's important to explicitly teach them these rhymes and the vocabulary that goes with them. If you have any nursery rhyme books at home, please take the time to read them to your child. Try to make sure they understand the unfamiliar words and phrases as you read. It's also very fun to act out the stories so that the child can has a hands on experiences with the rhymes making them more fun and meaningful. I encourage you to repeat any of the language experiences that I listed above at home with your child and other family members in your home.

The teachers will put on another famous "Made for television" skit about going to the mall and many of the things you can see and do there.
Make a purse/wallet with toy money and pretend to go shopping at the mall.
Make an "I love you Dad" place mat for our Dad's breakfast.
Make beaded jewelry and pretend to "buy" it at the jewelry store.
Play a "shoe mix up" game to match, sort, and try on various shoes at the "Shoe store."
Make candy to sell at our candy store.
Have a candy store in the fellowship hall and "sell" it to our friends and teachers.
Have our very own pet store in my room:)
Create a "NV Mall" with each classroom being a different type of store. This is always a lot of fun!

Set up a little "store" with play money and items to "buy." Take turns buying items and working as the cashier in the store.
Take your child to the mall to give them a hands on experience.:) Maybe allow them to buy something very small like a gumball or a snack at the food court where they are given the opportunity to give the money to the cashier using appropriate language/manners etc.
Pull out a bunch of shoes and practice sorting, matching, and trying them on. You can talk about whose shoes are the biggest/smallest/fit/don't fit etc.
Have your child make "play" money with paper, markers, scissors etc. They can practice asking "How much money do you want/have?"

Show and Tell….

**Each student will bring a show and tell item in one day a week on every week until the end of the school year. Here are the days for each child:

MONDAY: Levi and Henry will bring show and tell.

WEDNESDAY: Ashden and Isiah will bring show and tell.

FRIDAY: Ella and Sadie will bring show and tell.

HERE’S HOW IT GOES….

1. Please help your child pick something for show and tell on their assigned day. It can be anything from toys, food, drink, sporting equipment, notes, pictures,…ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING! Help them to say a few things about their item…I’ve suggested a few ideas on the attached paper.

2. Please put the item in a separate bag or their backpack so no one can see. We will play games (to work on categorical language) to guess what they brought.

3. The item will be returned home each day. Try to encourage your child to pick something different, but don’t worry if they want to bring the same thing as they did the day before.

4. Please don’t send anything valuable or breakable.

WEATHER

Date: December 1-5

Language Experiences:

We did a wind experience using various objects around the room and a blow dryer. The students predicted what you blow or not blow away. Then, we went outside to feel the wind! It was not windy that day!
We made umbrellas out of paper and decorated them with feathers and jewels. Check them out on the wall in my room!
We made a Tornado in a bottle using two 2 litter bottles, food coloring, and water. We watched as the tornado was spinning into the opposite bottle. The kids were amazed!
We made fake snow.
We watched "The Snowman" a movie about a boy who builds a snowman that comes to life. The students were "glued" to the movie as I narrated it using appropriate language targets.

We had a blast searching for bats in the forest, picked pumpkins in a pumpkin patch, and jumped in hay! Enjoy!
